Santosh finds job security in Sydney’s thriving IT sector

Written by Barry de Silva

Against the idyllic backdrop of Sydney’s harbourfront, successful Charles Sturt University alumnus, Santosh Pokhrel, has built a successful career as an IT support engineer, while making Sydney his home.  Back in his native country of Nepal, Santosh was a high school PE teacher. Seeking to switch careers and explore new horizons, Santosh enrolled in a Master’s course in IT at Charles Sturt University.

Reflecting on his decision to choose Charles Sturt University, Santosh emphasised the university’s “renowned reputation” in the IT industry providing students with the skills employers are looking for.

“The course structure is focused on supporting future careers – that gave me a unique advantage when I was looking for jobs,” Santosh explained.

Throughout his studies, Santosh was impressed with the availability of Charles Sturt’s staff and their willingness to support him.

“The lecturers and course coordinators were very helpful. Sometimes I was stuck with an assignment, and I would either call or email them and I’d get a response immediately – they were happy to help me.”

Since graduating, Santosh has immersed himself in the diverse culture of Sydney – ranked as the fourth most liveable city in the world – and has flourished in the IT sector securing roles as an IT support engineer at multiple prominent organisations.

“The job opportunities for IT networking and network security roles are growing rapidly. I want to take advantage of this, so I can accelerate my career.”

March 2024 saw the launch of a new Charles Sturt University Sydney campus located next to the new Victoria Metro station in North Sydney, less than three kilometres from the city centre and within easy reach of the Opera House, beaches, shopping and dining options. The campus offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in business, accounting and IT. Charles Sturt University Sydney Campus Director, Andrew Knight commented on the new campus, and the University’s successful track record for graduate employment.

“We are very excited to be welcoming new students to our first metro campus,” Andrew said. “Charles Sturt University has a rich history which can be traced back to 1895, and for seven consecutive years we have achieved the highest undergraduate employment rate among Australia’s top universities.”

For prospective students aspiring to pursue IT at Charles Sturt University, Santosh offered invaluable advice, based on his first-hand experience.

“Charles Sturt University has a great reputation for IT. The staff and lecturers engage positively with students, and after you graduate, they provide support for internships. So long as you put the work in while you study, you’ll be in demand once you graduate.”
